ENGLISH NAME: PAWPAW, PAPAYA

DESCRIPTION: It is a fast-growing semi-woody tree, with normally unbranched stem. It can grow up to 6m tall. It is dioecious with male and female flowers usually on separate plant. It is widely distributed usually around habitations in the forest zones throughout West Africa.
The leaf-pulp is haemostatic and is applied to wounds to promote healing.
It helps in the digestion of protein.
Very rich in nutrients such as vitamins A, B-complex, C, and E, calcium, beta-carotene, folate, dietary fibres, and more
It relieves indigestion, heartburn and constipation.
It has anti-cancer properties.
The leaf extract is used as febrifuge.
Decoction of the root is taken as an anthelmintic, and also useful for piles.
The milky juice is used to draw boils, applied on warts, tumours, corns, psoriasis, ringworm, eczema.
Juice from the leaf petiole is applied to burns.
Eating the fruit, helps to maintain good eyesight and prevents cataracts.
The rich contents of vitamins, antioxidants, and other phytochemicals makes it a very good immune system booster and also anti-aging.
The leaf is a good remedy for acne, very good for skin care.
Very useful in diabetes treatment. It enhances insulin sensitivity, reduces complications caused by diabetes, and promotes wound healing.

The unripe fruit is a good meat tenderizer. Just add some slices of the unripe fruit to the water while cooking the meat.
