POSITIVE THINKING: There is no magic wand TO SUCCESS. You could be greater than great personalities whose names have entered the positive pages of history if you are determined. A Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu once said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.’’ Use positive thinking. Visualization techniques can help you achieve greatness. Studies have shown that visualization can effective in improving athletic and academic performance. Many athletes (such as Muhammad Ali and Tiger Woods) have used visualization to help them win boxing matches, races, even golf tournaments. There are two basic types of visualization, outcome visualization and process visualization, and you should use them together for best results’’ Process visualization involves imagining all the steps you need to take in order to achieve your goal. Think about each action you will take leading up to accomplishing your goal of greatness.’’ (Trudi Griffin)

Foremost nationalist, Obafemi Awolowo said: ‘’ “While many men in power and public office are busy carousing in the midst of women of easy virtue and men of low morals, I, like a few others like me, am busy at my desk thinking about the problems of Nigeria and proffering solutions to them. ‘’Only the deep can call to the deep.” This means that whoever wishes to attain his/her goals in life must be prepared to work very hard and conscientiously. On his part, Nigeria’s first ceremonial president, Nnamdi Azikiwe stated that: ‘’There is plenty of space at the top because very few people care to travel beyond the average route.”And so, most of us seem satisfied to remain within the confines of mediocrity

REACHING THE FINISHING LINE: It is important to know that nothing comes easy. A newspaper article captioned: MAY YOUR ROAD BE ROUGH, written in 1964 by a great Nigerian, Tai Solarin is apposite here. Solarin reads in part: ‘’I am not cursing you; I am wishing you what I wish myself every year. I therefore repeat, may you have a hard time this year, may there be plenty of troubles for you this year! If you are not so sure what you should say back, why not just say, ‘Same to you’? I ask for no more. ‘’Our successes are conditioned by the amount of risk we are ready to take. ”Earlier on today I visited a local farmer about three miles from where I live. He could not have been more than fifty-five, but he said he was already too old to farm vigorously. He still suffered, he said, from the physical energy he displayed as a farmer in his younger days. Around his hut were two pepper bushes.’’ Tai Solarin simply counselled people seeking greatness and accomplishments that there is no cheap way of doing these.

THE YOUNG ONES: This actually applies to the old and young, but would be much useful for those still running around to make a difference in life. Achievers must be adventurous, rugged, creative, vibrant, determined, very daring and intelligent in positive terms. Intelligence must not be deployed into negative issues like criminal and social conduct. Vision and mission matter a lot, without which no plan could be drawn. And whoever does not plan, as they say, has planned to fail. Those personalities name above were gifted with the same faculties as youths of today at birth. The only seeming difference is that they developed their endowments and latent gifts and deployed these to help the causes of their societies. And for these, their names are carved boldly in gold on the positive pages of history.

The first two high flyers and notable Nigerians (or is it black people) whose stories are told in this compilation have dined with kings and queens. Both up them, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji have recorded monumental successes in life before attaining the age of 40 years. Were they born great? NO! Personality, described as a product of nature and nurture has certainly played a huge role in their emergence as global figures. At separate functions, both have dined with First Lady Mitchell Obama. The beauty of it is that they never lobbied to appear at the White House, the official residence of the United States’ first citizens. If these two young ladies wish to see Mr. President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria today, the State Chief of Protocol will not hesitate to on-pass them to the Chief of Staff to the President.

Adichie and Toyosi never thought of escaping through illegal routes or engaging in fraudulent activities. It is apparent that people who engage in malpractices may be brilliant because stealing and all forms of vices require real planning and mapping out of strategies. Another Obafemi Awolowo quote is apposite here — A man whose personality is fully developed never fears anything; he cringes not, and never feels inferior to anyone; ‘’His breadth of mind enables him to exercise his freedom in such a manner as not to endanger the interests and freedom of others. ‘’He is a citizen of the world – free from narrow prejudices. ‘’He is what he is because the three main constituents of his entity – his body, brain, and mind – are fully developed’’.
